Project Description:
Located at Federation Square in Melbourne’s Central Business District, the 3.2-hectare venue for arts and public events sits at the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets, built above busy railway lines and across from Flinders Street Station. The Calmative Pavilion is designed to offer a moment of respite from the bustling city life, inviting visitors to pause and enjoy the soothing aroma of lavender.
Inspired by Melbourne's rapidly expanding population and its urban landscape, the pavilion’s design reflects the scale of oversized buildings, while its lower section symbolizes the weight and pressure of the city's environment. Lavender is planted atop the structure to mitigate air pollution and provide a calming effect for visitors as they enjoy the surrounding sculptures. The seating, made from Setacryl—a material composed of 100% recycled plastic—boasts high resistance to external elements and ultraviolet rays, with impact resistance ten times greater than that of glass. To connect visitors with nature, both the pavilion’s structure and upper components are crafted from EcoPly plywood, known for its durability, flexibility, and environmentally friendly properties.
